Level 4: Joules and watts¶
Energy and power · level 4 of 8 · rough age 11-12 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
In this level you measure energy and power. You meet the joule and the watt, change between joules and the kilowatt-hours on an electricity bill, read the energy on a food label, work out the power of your own legs climbing stairs on Earth and on Mars, and compare the power of a Mars rover with a home on Earth.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| The joule | Use the joule as the unit of energy, and feel how big one is on Mars and on Earth |
| Power and the watt | Find power from energy and time, and give typical powers of everyday things |
| Kilowatt-hours | Change between kilowatt-hours and joules, and work out what an appliance uses |
| Energy in food | Read food labels in kJ and kcal, and find the power your body runs at |
| The power of a person | Work out your power climbing stairs, on Earth and on Mars |
| Rovers and their power | Compare the energy a rover has each sol with what a home uses each day |
