Level 3: Vibrations¶
Waves, sound and light · level 3 of 8 · rough age 9-10 (a guide for parents; anyone can start anywhere)
This level looks inside a sound. You see how a vibration squashes and stretches the air, why sound cannot cross empty space, and how fast it travels, so you can time thunder and echoes. Then you measure pitch in hertz and loudness in decibels, and follow a sound into your ear.
| Lesson | You will be able to |
|---|---|
| Sound is a vibration | Explain how a vibration makes a sound wave in air |
| Sound needs something to travel through | Explain why there is no sound in space |
| How fast sound travels | Use the speed of sound to time thunder and echoes |
| Pitch | Link pitch to frequency, measured in hertz |
| Loudness | Link loudness to the size of a vibration, and use decibels |
| Hearing | Follow a sound through the parts of the ear |
